2MWh Containerized Battery Storage for Power Plants in the Netherlands

2MWh Containerized Battery Storage Enhances Solar Revenue for Power Plants in the Netherlands

Background

The solar market in the Netherlands is booming, and more and more owners hope to maximize project benefits through the “self-generation and self-use + grid-connected electricity sales” model. An energy company in the Netherlands has a 1.2 MW ground photovoltaic power station, which mainly relies on daytime power generation and sells electricity to the grid for profit.

However, due to the obvious intermittent and volatile nature of solar generation, “surplus power abandonment” often occurs during sunny periods, resulting in the inability to further increase revenue. For this reason, the customer decided to introduce an energy storage system to achieve peak-to-valley power shaving and price arbitrage.

SCU Solution

SCU tailored a solar energy storage integrated system for this project, with the following core configurations:

2 MWh battery capacity, meeting the needs of multiple peak and valley scheduling within a day.

  • High-performance PCS

1 MW power can be flexibly switched with solar and energy storage grid connection, ensuring seamless connection between the grid connection and discharge.

  • Intelligent Energy Management System (EMS)

Real-time collection of solar generation, energy storage status, grid electricity price and load demand, and automatic execution of charging and discharging strategies.

Operation mode

When the sunlight is strong, PV power is first supplied to the grid, and the remaining power enters the energy storage system, so there is no abandonment of light.

  • Charging during low-price periods

When the grid electricity price is low or at night, the system will give priority to charging the battery from the grid or PV supply in small quantities, preparing for high-price electricity sales reserves.

  • Discharging during high-price periods

During peak electricity prices, the energy storage container discharges to the grid at a maximum power of 1 MW, and continues to generate electricity in combination with PV to achieve multi-point arbitrage.

Project results

Income improvement: By combining electricity price arbitrage with PV self-generation and self-use, the project’s annualized electricity income has improved.

The abandonment rate is close to zero: After the energy storage is involved, 100% of the surplus electricity during the day is stored and released, and the utilization efficiency of PV assets is greatly improved.

Smooth operation of the grid: Dynamic adjustment allows the project to switch smoothly between grid connection and off-grid, avoiding impact on the local grid.

Environmental benefits: Reduce carbon emissions by about 1000 tons per year, contributing green power to the energy transition.

Customer evaluation and prospects

The project leader said, “SCU’s integrated solar energy storage solution not only allows our photovoltaic power station to generate economic value during the off-peak period, but also maximizes the benefits through intelligent scheduling. In the future, we will continue to cooperate with SCU to explore more solar and energy storage + application models.

SCU will work with more Dutch and European customers to continuously optimize products and services, promote “solar + energy storage” to become a standard model for renewable energy profitability, and inject new momentum into the green and low-carbon economy.
